Mobility scooters.Tests or not.

Recommended Posts

There should definitely be training in safe usage of the scoota.

The problem is, as pointed out a few weeks ago, the last time this subject arose, there are unscrupulous people who will sell some monster chariot, to a little old lady of 4'6 and 5 stone-wet-through, with no regard for anything but the pound signs in his eyes. No regard for her ability to handle the machine.

Shopmobility Sheffield takes customers through a health and safety training course, in safe handling of scootas, and will not let the customer out without ascertaining that they have been adequately trained in steering and handling of the machines.

Shopmobility Sheffield is pressing for standardisation, across the board, of the depth of training given to customers, so that all scoota users are competent.

I think you'd run foul of disability discrimination laws if you insisted on a test - since there is no test to be taken before you're allowed to walk.

On the other hand, walking speed is perhaps 3mph, 4mph if you're a fast walker - so mobility scooters should be capable of no more than 4mph, if they're to be used without a test.
