muckymurphy
Just when you think the labour government can't sink any lower, it's now deciding it's going to give away free laptops and broadband connections to families who can't be bothered to work for a living. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8449485.stm So once again we working people who work hard to pay for our own laptops and broadband end up subsidising those families who can't be bothered to work. Who decided that having a laptop and internet connection was an essential anyway? Most of these families will only use it for playing games and looking at porn and the kids won't get a look in! Another £300 million of taxpayers money wasted! a lot of these wasters already have laptops and mobiles that have been stolen from the few workers who could afford them. i have never voted for any mainstream parties but for the first time in my life i am thinking of voting tory, simply because ukip cant get their act together and there is no hope of labour getting us out of recession for any length of time. there should be free phone (yes, i've heard of skype) and internet for the workers. they can keep the television channels. this has already been done in a form about ten years ago, when cheap computers and printers were offered to needy families for about £60. anyone remember? Most office workers already get free phone calls and internet access all day long.
epiphany
Yeh, screw equal opportunity! This t'interweb thing won't take off anyway. It's not like we're leaving poorer kids behind. Even if we are, sod em, it's their fault they're poor and that's the end of it.
Grandad.Malky
I am surprised that someone hasn’t said that those without a laptop are living below the poverty line or something as equally ridiculous.

OOmpa
This doesn't surprise me in the least, apparently computers are no longer a luxury and are essential for education/learning! They are having a laugh aren't they!
millhouses24
Whether or not this scheme is actually an efficient use of money is open to debate, but let's not use it as ANOTHER tedious reason to do some poor people bashing. I mean, they live in council houses? They wear hoodies? Of course - they must only be capable of using laptops to look at porn and waste time Why not start a thread on office workers (like me in the past ) who have used work computers and work time to do their own personal stuff, or rich people who have screwed the tax system big time to balance things out a bit? epiphany
Whose fault ?..The Kids ? Well yes. Surely if a child is poor, the best thing to do is punish them by making sure they are kept behind the wealthier kids who are already utilising digital technology to develop essential IT literacy skills for their own future. Essential, my eye! When did you last read about someone dying because they had no broadband connection? The essentials in life are stuff like food, clothing and shelter. Laptops and internet connections are luxuries and if anyone wants one they should pay for it out of their own money!
