Free laptops and broadband for poor families!

Recommended Posts

You've not heard of one being sold. Good. Doesn't mean they aren't. Why would anyone tell you if that were their intent?

Because the students have to bring them in every day.

If the laptop is not present, its chased up with the parent, just like if they don't wear correct uniform or bring PE kit and equipment.

Ah, but it wouldn't buy the votes of the workshy and feckless would it?

Because all the parents of disabled children are workshy and feckless. Of course.

It's just sour grapes because some people can't/won't read about who the scheme is aimed at. Remember who this is prioritsed for, disabled kids and those in care. Having home access to the net is proven to boost their grades. Not school or library access, but home access.

Why would it be a vote winner? There are far more Daily Mail ranters in this country than parents of kids with Special Needs.

Sounds sensible. When I were at school there were always kids that didn't have kits/equipment as required and don't think any chasing with parents would have changed that.

However they were in the minority (at least at the school I went to) so maybe not as bad an issue as I fear.

The new vs 2nd hand thing still bothers me though.

If they are kids with SEN they may well need specialist software/hardware installing and so old kit might not support it. A lot of the latest kit for blind users, for example, is extremely resource hungry. They will also last longer without going obsolete, which makes better financial sense.

I don't think laptops given to pupils under the Home Access Assistive Technology scheme will be brought in to school at all, for several reasons:

There has been a requirement for LEAs to provide SEN children with access to the curriculum for some years; often this means a laptop that they have in school already.

Schools will not want a significant group of pupils trying to do all their schoolwork on a laptop in class, when they can write perfectly well. Plus the technical difficulties associated with laptops.

I’m for the scheme, but can’t see it being well policed or indeed evaluated to see if it made a difference.

That doesn't sound right.

According to the Bectra site there was a scheme that ran in parallel to the Home Access pilot in 2008 that helped "Looked After Children", I assume that's the PC term for disabled kids and those in care.

The latest announcement is targeted at low income families who may not be able to afford a computer or the internet, no mention of prioritising for disabled kids and those in care.

Where did I mention disabled kids?

Where in the BECTA document or the Government press releases does it mention disabled kids?

The programme will begin in November 2008 with targeted funding available for all local authorities to provide home access for groups such as looked after children and others for whom the authority has special responsibility. The wider programme will be piloted in early 2009 in two local authority areas, with expansion to the rest of England starting in autumn 2009. Families in receipt of income support or unemployment benefits will be able to apply for a ‘Home Access’ Grant which they can use to purchase a package from accredited suppliers. The programme aims to work towards universal home access by 2011.

So families on income support or unemployment benefit will be able to apply.

I've read who the scheme is aimed at, I've read the terms of the scheme (vague as they are, no service level agreements stated, etc).

No reason why these needy kids can't have second hand kit cascaded from local schools is there? Why not issue the new kit where it will do most good, for more hours of the day?

Just another pathetic 'think tank' backed Labore vote buying scheme.

I can picture it now in the dole queue.

"Have you been actively seeking work"

"Yes I'm thinking of going into the IT sales sector, I already have one laptop to sell"

Can you believe people are still going to vote for this shower?

I bet a £ to a penny thatLabour gets returned in Sheffield!

You're missing the point. No one's saying poorer families shouldn't be allowed to have online access, we're angry because working people have to pay for their own laptops and broadband and now we're being forced to pay for unemployed people to have the same for free!

If poorer families want laptops and broadband they should get off their backsides, find a job and pay for it out of their own pockets!

Poor doesn't necessarily mean the family are unemployed. Have you heard of low income families? They pay tax, would you believe it

So, sod the poor. In fact, why stop at not giving them a laptop/broadband, if these people pay nothing in taxes then I say their children should not be allowed to attend school, after all, us tax payers are paying for their education.
