Can anyone help me locate PAGE HALL ORPHANAGE on the 1911 Census?

Page Hall was the site of the Teachers' Orphanage in Sheffield from 1894 to 1927. It stood in its own private grounds at the junction of Bolsover Road and Firth Park Road. [The buidling still exists as a care home although the grounds are much reduced in size] It should be a simple matter to find it on the 1911 Census, but what was its address? It doesn't seem to be named as Page Hall or an orphanage.

Here's a copy from the 1905 White's Directory giving details of the relevant part of Firth Park Road. This indicates that Bolsover Road left Firth Park Road between Nos 169 and 191, with the orphanage being on the upper corner. A later (1925) directory confirms that the orphanage's address was on Firth Park Road rather than Bolsover Road, "Mrs Alice Bradley" being the matron at that time. The relevant page for Firth Park Road is, annoyingly, missing from my 1925 directory, however a much later (1973) directory indicates that Bolsover Road crosses Firth Park Road between Nos. 105 and 107 on the odd-number side. So the houses were evidently renumbered at some time, though the 1905 numbering is perhaps more likely to be what you need for 1911. Hope this is helpful!

In the 80s, and also today I assume, the entrance to the building's grounds was off the end of Camell Road, there was no way to it from Firth Park Road (you could get to it from the end of our garden though - it was boarded up then), so maybe the layout of Firth Park Road changed at some point, hence the different numbering?

The stables and servants quarters I think stood on Bolsover Road but were derelict. They were pulled down in the mid-80s at a guess and an care home was built on the site.

Many thanks to HILLSBRO and SEGASONIC for the info. I guess I'm looking for anywhere from 169 and 191 Firth Park Road on the census. Is there any way to narrow this down a bit more?

I clicked on the 'copy' hotlink and sure enough it took me to the entry in White's directory. HOW DO YOU DO THAT? If I knew I could post a photo of Page Hall and its predecessor, Firs Hall.

Segasonic, have looked at the 1905 OS map for Page Hall. Original entrance looks as if it was on the corner of Bolsover Road and Firth Park Road. You go up a drive and this takes you to the front aspect of the house. Camell Road isn't shown on the map and must have been built later. It now forms the main approach to the building, which as I've said in my first post exists as a care home.

In Kelly's 1905 directory Page Hall falls between...

169 Aldridge, Joseph, Foreman

Bolsover road

and

191 Meyers, John, Foreman

These properties are to be seen on the 1902 OS survey so were probably there in 1901.

Just noticed on the 1902 map that only about six of the now existing properties between St Cuthbert's and Idsworth road had been built so the numbering may be meaningless.

There used to be a carriage drive from the top end of Bolsover road before that part of the Page Hall estate was sold for development. It is clearly shown on the 1850 and 1893 maps and followed the line of the present Cammell road. At that time Bolsover road was known as Dickson lane. The bottom entrance was originally just a footpath.

You can upload JPEG, GIF etc. files to an image hosting site such as http://photobucket.com/ and then copy and paste the link.

Although the address of the the orphanage was clearly on Firth Park Road, it may be that it didn't have a number as such; I don't know how it might appear in the census return.

I think I remember reading once that the entrance (or an entrance) to the Page Hall grounds was right over on Barnsley Road near the workhouse. I wonder if the carriage drive was something to do with this?

and a drawing of the house used as the Girls' Orphanage at Firs Hill.

I'd be very interested to see a photo of Firs Hill if you have one.

In the 19th. century there was a large house called Bolsover Hill on the corner of Bolsover road and Barnsley road (which was then known as Dickson lane).

Coming down Bolsover road from Barnsley road, where it turns sharp right is where the main entrance to Page Hall began. The drive went up the hill a little bit and then turned rright along the line of Cammell road.

Section of 1893 map here explains it better ;)

Dickson lane was of course much narrower than Bolsover road is now.
