Local amateur theatre group The Company will be performing Arthur Miller’s The Crucible next week at the University Drama Studio Theatre on Glossop Road, S10 2TD.

Directed by Ed Bancroft, this will be the first of The Company's three productions for 2010, and will be performed for four nights, Wednesday 27th-Saturday 30th January, at 7.30pm.

Set in Massachusetts, New England, The Crucible is a dark and powerful account of the events surrounding the 1692 Salem witch trials.

The story is centred on the young, flirtatious orphan Abigail Williams, her former employer farmer John Proctor, and his virtuous wife Elizabeth. When the young girls of the village take part in some dancing and chanting in the woods one night and are disturbed by Abigail’s uncle Reverend Parris, his daughter Betty falls mysteriously ill. Fuelled by hysteria, the rumour of witchcraft spirals out of control, leading to the imprisonment and execution of many. But all is not as it seems, as even respected members of the community have their secrets…

Tickets (£7, £5 concessions) can be purchased in advance by calling the box office on (0114) 201 0090 or by emailing tickets@thecompanysheffield.co.uk.
