Things for a student to do that do not involve clubbing

I've been a student here for a fair bit over a year now and the other day after a few pints me and some mates realised all we ever seem do is go clubbing

were looking for some different nights out, sheffield has a lot to offer as a city and i bet some of you on this forum can suggest some great ideas that arent centred around getting drunk

so far we've tried the dogs which was a lot of fun

and are planning to have a town hall tour/ghost walk

kehlam island tour,

ski village

and see some ice hockey at Don valley

but the key thing we want to do in spring is have a course night out (15-20 or so people) and stay in a hostel that can be reached on a bus, but somewhere in the rural area, any suggestions where to go or stay?

oh and any other suggestions for nights out in sheff that are fun but a bit out of the norm would be appreciated

Hi Ian

If you are looking for an entertaining night out, you might want to have a look at some Thai/kickboxing and MMA (similar to the UFC also known as Cage fighting). There will be en event of this nature at Skate Central (the old ice rink near Grosvenor Casino) on Queens Road.

It is an evening event and there are licensed bars available at the venue.

For students it only costs £15 to get in while for working folk the tickets start from £22.

Do a 10 mile walk to Hathersage starting at Hunters Bar, through forge dam and via Ringinglow and stop at YHA there. The university probably has a walking group who could kit you out with maps and offer a few tips etc. You could get the bus back easily.

Go and watch one of the football teams - I wont state my preference

What about watersports or cycling somewhere like Rother Valley Country Park - its great in the spring or any time of year

Check out the listings for the Library Theatre on Surrey Street

Its next door to the Lyceum, is cheap and cheerful and always has a weird and wonderful line up of events to look forward to.

There are comedians, plays, singers, lectures you name it.

I have been to see amateur theatre groups perform there quite a lot and the 53 Group that are on in April are ace - I am a little biased as i do the lights but honestly, the performances are as good as anything you will see on the professional stage next door - I can't promise that the lighting design will challenge anything that they might be doing but you will be able to see the stage at least!

the general cemetery near eccy rd do guided tours, usually on a sunday where people dress up as characters from the cemetery and 'pop out' to tell their story. its free though, a donation is recommended. i went thinking it would be drab but it was good
