Plain Talker
I think you're right PT but it's not easy trying to convince her about this She's already booked a consultation because she thinks this will really improve the way she feels about herself. It sounds daft but she's really dreading summer and people seeing her feet because she thinks everyone is staring at her feet when she wears sandals. I couldn't bear the thought of having pins sticking out of my toes personally. I'm not psychiatrist, but I think your friend has a strong case of body dysmorphia. redruby
I'm not psychiatrist, but I think your friend has a strong case of body dysmorphia. Maybe. I've found this article about toe shortening so it's not as unusual as people think http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/beauty/article1940848.ece

Meem
what a stupid thing to worry about, feet. Why spend so much money on feet? No one is going to dump her because her second toe is shorter than the other. She should get a boob job or something noticeable!

You can't really say it's stupid to worry about feet but do I think she needs to get it into perspective as the surgery sounds awful and there's a long recovery time. The swelling can last 6 months! Godzilla
This is known as "Grecian" toes, as it was considered classically beautiful in ancient Greece. I can't remember where I heard this, but Marilyn Monroe was supposed to have her second toes longer than her big toe - and I was also told that it was a common trait in highly sexed people! (And as for MM:- My goodness, that was one beautiful woman. Regardless of toes! Now, what I heard was that MM had a sixth toe, on one foot.) Podmeister
Ancient Greeks thought people with a longer 2nd toe were special hence the term Grecian foot type. Broadly speaking there are 3 anatomical variations (1) Grecian where the 2nd metatarsal is longer, (2) Egyptian where the 1st met is the longest. (3) square, where all the mets are of similar length. A Grecian foot type is a common anatomical foot type in the UK there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a Grecian foot type. The only time it can cause problems generally is if the 1st met is abnormally short, this can cause abnormal loading of the 2nd and 3rd mets leading to corns or stress fracture (particularly in dancers and runners). If you have a normal foot that is pain free and giving you no problems leave it alone! If you shorten the 2nd met there is a significant risk of causing problems with the other joints this can lead to pressure hot spots that can cause painful corns that would be with you for life. Also there is the risk of premature wear and tear arthritic changes in later life to the adjacent joints. Furthermore there is the risk of scar formation from the surgery and a small risk of infection. Recovery times from this type of surgery are long, typically months and there is the pain. I would also be very surprised if you could get a Sheffield foot specialist to shorten your toe for cosmetic reasons. You certainly would not want a none foot specialist doing this type of surgery as these operations do sometimes go wrong. If you have the surgery and you develop a problem your foot can not be surgically put back to how it was before. In the U.S there is a high rate of litigation over such failed operations. The Ancient Greeks may have been onto something.
