Spike Milligan’s Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall

Tue 2 - Sat 6 March 2010

Lyceum Theatre

Spike Milligan’s celebrated war memoirs are brought to anarchic life in this critically acclaimed touring production at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre from Tuesday 2 March to Saturday 6 March.

This epic, everyman’s odyssey through World War Two, with a cast of extraordinary characters, charts Gunner Milligan’s progress from joining the Royal Artillery through the North African and Italian campaigns. High comedy and tragedy collide, as we follow him and his ad hoc jazz quartet – complete with their famed comedy routines – adrift on the tide of great historic events.

Using Milligan’s own words, the story is told through a joyous fusion of comedy, jazz, song and dance – showing how humour, music and comradeship enabled a hapless and disparate bunch of young men to prevail against the might of the Nazi War Machine.

Songs include Chattanooga Choo Choo, Ain’t Misbehavin’, In the Mood, Honeysuckle Rose and many more.

Winner of Best Regional Production at the What's On Stage Awards 2010.

We are thrilled to announce that Spike Milligan's Adolf Hitler: My Part In His Downfall has won Best Regional Production at the What's On Stage Awards 2010!

This is a particularly special honour for the production, as these are the only major UK theatre awards voted for by theatregoers themselves.

Don't forget that our competition to win a pair of tickets to the opening night here in Sheffield is open until this Thursday - just tell us your story of good camaraderie or friendship in a post on this thread for your chance to see this award-winning show.

Myself and a load of friends went camping out in Derbyshire last summer. The weather was fantastic all day and come early evening we decided to get the barbecue going. That was our first mistake - almost as we struck the first match we could feel the first few drops of rain falling. Over the next half an hour the sky darkened and the wind picked up to such an extent we feared for the tents - the gazebo was already well on the way to being ruined. By now the rain was lashing down with one of the heaviest downpours of the year, with no letup in sight.

With no pub nearby the only option was to seek refuge in one of the larger tents.

One by one we gravitated to the tent with our camping chairs. At last count there were no fewer than 20 of us in there like sardines, wrapped in blankets and sleeping bags with just the occasional hand holding a can or glass of wine sticking out. As the weather got even worse a real blitz spirit emerged, and a good time was had by all - we ended up being stuck in there for hours until eventually it was time to brave the weather and go to investigate whether your tent had held up or you were destined to spend the night sleeping in a puddle. Not everyone was lucky!

It wasn't what we'd planned but showed that you can't stop a brit on holiday determined to have fun, even in the tipping down rain.
