On Thursday February 25th, WagonWheel Presents... delivers another fine trio of live acts to The Grapes for your entertainment. Heading up the evening will be the musical delights of The Listeners, we have some dark contemporary folk from Garforth & Myers and Frank opens the show. Doors are 8pm and entry is just £3.

***THE LISTENERS***

The Listeners are a duo from the North of England. Emma Thorpe provides the main voice, a velvet glove softening the punch, delivering The Listeners songs with, in turn, uncompromising invective and heart on sleeve insight. Robert Cook's dark baritone voice and explosive guitar lines complete The Listeners emotive sound.

They have had a busy year, curating their own monthly night 'The Weight', and are set to hit the studio in 2010 to begin work on their first full length album.

"Like P.J Harvey......****** off, unplugged and wearing a kaftan!" Music Mart Magazine 2007

"the listeners were f**king brilliant i really enjoyed last night!" Richard Hawley

***GARFORTH & MYERS***

Born to Barnsley in South Yorkshire, Rory Garforth and Adam Myers play unique and dark contemporary folk music. On meeting in 2007 (whilst both in different bands) Garforth and Myers talked of the possibility of coming together to create a side project with a shared vision.

From the initial concept a number of demos were recorded, which attracted the attention of producers Keith Angel and Andy Seward; perhaps best known for their work with such folk / roots luminaries as Jon Boden, Kate Rusby, Martin Simpson, John Tams, Chris Drever et al.

Work started on putting together a self-financed album in 2009 after months of writing, planning and preparation. The initial release, the four track EP 'Bonfires' is out now.

The illusive pair kicked off their live set in September 2009 with more dates to come in 2010 along with the completion of the full-length album.

***FRANK***

Formally drummer with the band Theech, Frank has taken to performing songs in the classic singer/songwriter tradition of the likes of Bob Dylan. Drawing a more modern influence from the likes of Willy Mason, which clearly shines through in his work, he comes to The Grapes to with guitar and harmonica in tow having previously proved popular at a couple of our Acoustic Nights.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is tomorrow night, and there's been a slight change to proceedings. Along with The Listeners and Garforth & Myers, we'll also now be joined by Andy Whitehouse of The Silver Darlings. From 8pm, £3...

***ANDY WHITEHOUSE of The Silver Darlings***

The Silver Darlings are a loose collective of musicians based around the duo of Andy Whitehouse (guitar/vocals) and Mike Howe (accordian). Roots music for stubborn romantics and hopeless optimists. We're delighted to have Andy open tonight's show with a solo set as he works on material for a forthcoming new album.
