Wildcat
10 years since becoming a peer Lord Ashcroft still hasn't established his eligibility to be a Peer by being a UK Tax-Payer. He boasts of his financial contributions to the Tory party winning many of their gains in the last election: Along with two other colleagues, he had organised and funded a huge campaign to boost the Tory performance in a series of marginal seats across the country. Twenty-four out of the 41 targeted had been taken from Labour; 25 of the 33 candidates who won seats from Labour or the Liberal Democrats had benefited from the fighting fund and six more sitting MPs had held their seats. But: Electoral law demands that all individual donors to British political parties must be registered to vote in the country. Although Lord Ashcroft gave the Government a solemn undertaking that he would become a UK voter and pay tax in the UK when his peerage was confirmed in 2000, there is as yet no evidence that he has done either. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-tories-and-the-tycoon-why-ashcroft-is-costing-cameron-dear-1899053.html Can we trust the Tories when they are so easily bought? http://mydavidcameron.com/posters/nix1
Tony
The conservatives have stated that they will change the law so that all peers must be UK tax payers, so yes you probably can trust them on that. All the main parties have their anomalies in this area (I'm not a fan of unions having undemocratic block votes) but policy is what matters to citizens. Time will tell eh? Rioja
Why did he get the peerage in the first place? How many times has he spoken/voted in the House of Lords? Lord Ashcroft of Belize indeed.
muddycoffee
Someone as wealthy and influential as Ashcroft can easily make it appear that he is not a Non Dom when in fact he is. He can easily satisfy the rule that he is a "UK tax payer" by managing his income in a creative way. Many of the advisers who make these tax rules for HMRC also work for tax avaiding departments in large Accountants and Banks where they advise millionaires how to work the system like this. This is the reason why no progress is ever made to stop these selfish tax avoiders.

Four peers — including two former ministers — offered to help undercover reporters posing as lobbyists obtain an amendment in return for cash. Two of the peers were secretly recorded telling the reporters they had previously secured changes to bills going through parliament to help their clients. Lord Truscott, the former energy minister, said he had helped to ensure the Energy Bill was favourable to a client selling “smart” electricity meters. Lord Taylor of Blackburn claimed he had changed the law to help his client Experian, the credit check company. Taylor told the reporters: “I will work within the rules, but the rules are meant to be bent sometimes.” The other peers who agreed to assist our reporters for a fee were Lord Moonie, a former defence minister, and Lord Snape, a former Labour whip. Tony
It's the Ashcroft one that's old. What ever flavour of politician there is no place for corruption in either House. Mind you with the example set with the Saudi arms deal there doesn't seem to be much in the way of leadership on anti-corruption from this out of date government. Full yer boots lads!
