crookes
A friend found a 1 gallon stoneware jug in a junk shop which had J S & T Birks Wine and Spirit Merchants Sheffield and C Hawley China Rooms Sheffield, impressed in it. She would like some information about these two businesses. I googled J S & T Birks and found that they had donated money to the poor in 1881 and 1882. So they were around 128-years-ago. If anyone knows anymore, I would be grateful.

hillsbro
The 1876 Whites directory gives Joseph Swindon Birks Hanover Villa Broomhall and Thomas Rhodes Birks Stone Grove Tree Root walk. Here are scans from the 1871 census for J.S. Birks and T.B. Birks. It must have been a sizeable business to judge from the eight employees who lived in at J.S. Birks' house alone. Joseph Swinden Birks was born in September 1825 at Norton, near Askern, Yorkshire, Thomas Rhodes Birks was born in May 1827 at nearby Hatfield.
