mahonia
I have been told that Sheffield once had its own building society and there office was on either Queen Street or Campo Lane ? Does anyone know the history of the building society and did anyone work or have a account there ?

jjbarnesfan
I think the comparatively tiny Sheffield Building society was taken over by the Bradford and Bingley in 1990.

hillsbro
That's right, I think there office was where Haybrooks is now. Not quite - it was a bit further along, where Winkworth's is now on the corner of Lee Croft. As jjbarnesfan wrote, the Sheffield Building Society was taken over by Bradford & Bingley. My mum kept her savings there and she got an extra 5% interest on the balance due to the takeover..
Fantomas
If you look at the building opposite Urban Deli on Campo Lane (now currently empty) you can still make out where the big 'Sheffield Building Society' lettering was on the side of it.
