The Giraffe
Hi My mum often tells me about the shop she grew up in on Bennet Street (would have been opposite CCC if still there now). Does anyone have any mermories of this shop or photos? I think it would have been a grocery shop as I'm sure she's mentioned fruit and veg. Any stories or photos would be nice! hillsbro
The 1968 Kelly's Directory gives "L. Pearson, fruiterer" on the corner of Bennett Street and Hill Street. By 1972 the shop had closed and it was a private house. The shop must be the one visible in this photo (click on Zoom to enlarge) which, although taken in the 1920s, seems to show a traditional corner shop.
