London Club - New steak house on Surrey St

Me and my partner decided to give the London Club a try last night.

Had a table booked for 8pm, we arrived early which was not a problem and taken to our table.

The waitress was very pleasant and very attractive, we placed our order and were given some nice breads, the starters followed a little too quickly after the breads but was not too much of a problem.

I had the bacon and egg starter which was excellent, highly recommended.

We both had sirloin steaks for mains I thought mine was very good but my partner said hers was a little chewy.

We then had desserts which we ordered with a different waitress, we also asked for two coffees which never arrived.

With drinks our bill came to £72.

Good food, reasonable prices, just needs a little attention to the service but I would go again.

Tried the London Club the other night and was not impressed. The starters were nice but both the steaks we had were very poor. We both went for the early bird menu and asked for medium rare steaks, they were both very very rare. Fair enough, I could cope with that as due to reasons out of our control we were short of time so did not want to get them replaced. I asked for some English mustard, they did not have any. OK, it's not much to ask for but fair enough, they have no mustard. (Also no cider, not even in bottles)

When it came to eating the steaks it was like we were given plastic knives, they were both really hard to get through and mine especially was really gristly in places and the entire steak was really chewy. I like a bit of fat on a steak and expect a bit of gristle but this was really tough going, as we tried to hack our way through them the table was wobbling and the plates were sliding about! They were also lacking in flavour.

End of the meal we had to call them over as nobody seemed to want to clear the table and unknown to them we were in a rush. They asked how the meal was and I pointed out the steaks were not very good, the waitress could see how much of it was inedible from what was left on my plate so she said she would show the chef. On her return she said that she was sorry and it should not have been like that but some times that happens with steak. She took the money and wandered off!

OK, given more time we would have complained earlier but for them to acknowledge the fact that the food they served us was rubbish and just walk off was terrible! We could not have stayed for a free drink or desert even if they had offered us one but it would have at least shown us they cared and I might have then been prepaired to give them another chance. Not sure if it's just the early bird steaks that are rubbish or if we were just unlucky, either way we won't be going back.

Thanks for that review, Neeeeek.

I was contemplating organising a foodie meet there very shortly - I won't be bothering now.

My take is, if you're going to specialise in one area - make sure you get it right!

We have had full price and early-bird steaks, and both were very good. I wouldn't cancel because of one bad experience - as long as it is only the one bad 'un.

P.S. Neeeeeek, if you read this - have you tried the new Kashmir yet?

A good restaurant shouldn't have this many complaints from one dining experience.

If you're going to specialise in one area with your food, then as I've said before, get it right. Diners will expect no less than perfection.

None of the complaints made (assuming they are true and Neeeek doesn't work for a rival eaterie ;)) were acceptable - and more to the point, those complaints were dealt with very poorly. I hope the London Club staff/management have seen this thread because there are several things that could be learnt from it.

I might see how the thread pans out before I make a decision as to whether I feel assured enough to give them a go myself.

I honestly can not sing the praises of this restaurant highly enough. The food is exceptional and the steaks have always been cooked to perfection! I am really fussy and like my steaks BLUE! Most restaurants think that rare fits this bill and they are so wrong. The chef here has an eye for his steaks.

Anyway, that's not the (only) reason why I want to really rate this place.

Recently my fiance and I were due to be married. We both love the food here and decided that as we were having the ceremony at the town hall that we would book the London club for our reception. After consulting with them we came up with an excellent menu based on their pre theatre menu. The owner suggested a few alterations to the menu and he obviously knows his onions as most of our guests picked the additional options!!

The price quoted was an absolute steal for 50 guests. We liased with them continually and they were excellent.

HOWEVER........

Two days before the wedding we had to cancel due to the fact that my partner went into labour ten weeks early. The London club were excellent about it and did not charge us a penny for pulling out at the last minute. They were understanding and very sympathetic.

So, here we are with a new (premature) baby and no wedding so we decided to go ahead and book another date near Christmas. I cheekily phoned up the London Club and they actually moved around some of the reservations to actually fit us in! In my book that makes them heroes!

Good food

Good prices

Good staff

All around 10/10!

Apart from the wedding meal we WILL go there again and again!

Yeah, maybe he does really love it, isn't that the whole point?! I too really love it, have made several favourable comments above already. The only comment I can see on this whole thread which isn't overall favourable towards the London Club is Neeeks - I think that's pretty impressive actually.

A few sachets of mustard and some tins of Woodpecker should sort it for Neeeek:hihi:

The main fault seems to be the attitude of one waitress, who should have made sure everything was OK and found some form of compensation when she found out that all was not well. A bit of training and supervision is in order but not the blacklisting of a whole restaurant!

I do hope it was a one off, there is no excuse for not having english mustard, there is a shop 2 mins away, go buy a pot if you run out unexpectedly!

I guess I was more disappointed due to all the really good coments that had been made on here so wondered if it was just the early bird steaks that were not up to scratch, I thought my knife must have been broken!
