Tony
Do use Tory" as a pejorative term? I always try to use proper names when referring to any political party out of respect but I've noticed that while Conservatives happily call themselves Tories, a lot of people seem to use the word as a less than endearing term. Are there equivalents for the other parties apart from the very dull LieBore? The Liberal Democrats seem to rarely use their full name, reverting to the shorthand Lib-Dem. Socialists seems to have fallen out of favour with Labour.
HeadingNorth
The thing about "Tory" is that it was originally the name of that party, just as the Liberal party were once called Whigs. Nobody refers to Whigs any more; I'm not sure why Tory has remained as a nickname. Labour have only ever been called Labour, with or without the "New" appendage. Jabberwocky
In the 80s and 90s I used to, the word "Tories" was easier to snap out when I was ranting about them, it sounds better than `Those bloody conservative, money grabbing upper class pigs!` As Ive got older and realised that most of my instinctive reaction to them was bred into me by staunch labour parents and friends, colleagues and what have you, Ive started to use the word as simply a title instead of part of a hate filled rant. Stoatwobbler
Where does the term "Tory" come from? It was originally a term for Irish bandits, but was also used to describe supporters of James II. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tory
