You realise that there is only 1 city in Yorkshire with a Premier League team... Hull, and they only made it last season. Getting a Premier League team is just pot luck you have to get a money bags involved, a competent money bags at that and make sure he/she doesn't asset strip. It is really no reflection on the city or how good an investment it is.

Having a team in the premiership puts it on the global map.

Bring investment into the city.

Has transformed cities like Norwich & Swansea

Do you think that the Sevenstone project wouldve gone ahead along time ago if Sheffield had a football team in the Premier league?

Its an interesting thought.

It would have helped. The name recognition makes a City more marketable so it would help. Sheffield just isn't marketed very well at all (understatement!).

Do you think Leeds has a Premiership club? Have Norwich and Swansea been transformed in the last 2 years? Tottenham has a Premiership club. Did you see what happened to Tottenham High Road during the riots two years ago?

I've heard of barrels being scraped but this really is ridiculous.

This from the Star:

http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/innovative-plan-to-make-sure-new-office-block-will-be-built-in-sheffield-1-5948575

"Coun Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “In the last five years development of new office development has virtually stopped."

CTP intend to sell the completed building to a private sector buyer. But the developers admit in the current market securing funding for a speculative development is almost impossible."

Perhaps because there's no demand Councillor?

The price which the council would pay has been negotiated by external surveyors and would just cover the cost of the development, plus a small profit.

But the developers say they are confident they will sell to a private buyer.

Even if the council buys the property, the cost would be covered by increased income from business rates and rent.

I'm sure the developers would be delighted to offload the building onto SCC if they can't otherwise find a buyer. What will SCC do with it and why are they putting up public money for this, they aren't property speculators. Will we, the taxpayers of Sheffield end up with a white elephant? How can Councillor Lodge guarantee this won't happen?

Coun Lodge added: “We firmly believe this new development will assist several existing businesses that want to move into good quality new offices, and could also attract new businesses into the city.

So some existing firms might move (or they might not) and there's the ghost of a chance of some new jobs. Despite the demand apparently not being there for office space in the city centre.

Why do I get the feeling this will not end well for the financially astute, never wrong SCC?

Sounds like the developers have got a fantastic deal there but if that's what it takes to get something built then the council pretty much no option, although perhaps they just fancy some fancy new office space. There's plenty of free offices in the city centre although quite a bit of it is ripe for knocking down and isn't likely to attract "bluechip" companies.

Not really.

The "transformation" of Swansea - like Cardiff - is due to the Welsh getting considerably more £ per head from central government.

Norwich has always been the regional centre of a pretty prosperous area - East Anglia.
