Yes , ive read that post , but there is no mention of where the money the council make from the sale of the properties went. What was it spent on ?

Which bit of this don't you understand?

The council had to use it's funds to compulsorily purchase the property.

They sold it to Hammerson and got their money back.

So, the Council didn't "make" any money, they just got their costs back.

If you want to know what the Council spends its money on, have a look at their accounts. They are a matter of public record.

Councils are very little different to big business in as much as their accounting records are often found to be of an artistically creative nature :D

Would you expect, bearing in mind the projected future shopping trends, John Lewis to build a Flagship store in Leeds, and also a new store in Sheffield, which would come after the one in Leeds has already drawn a percentage of its custom from the city? This farce makes me shudder to think what catastrophic mess our council would make if the government was to allow the regions greater freedom to spend the available money. Probably the first thing they would do is give John Mothersole a pay rise :help::loopy:

Really - can you find an example?

Local Authorities spending is scrutinised in great depth - and much of the records are freely available to the public, for example , everything costing Sheffield City Council over £250 is recorded here;

You can soon waste thousands of pounds by frittering away sums of £250 or less that arnt accounted for. :)

When the annual spend is £1,392,000,000 I'm sure the thousands you mention makes all the difference............not.

yeah ok everything?

I think the auditors and the Government might just spot it if the council tried to cook the books - in fact there's nowt better than the Government would like than a high profile Labour council caught cooking the books.

Lib Dems would have a field day at the next council elections - might even end up with Tory councillors in double figures.

But the fact remains it is still tax payers money being wasted weather that be £1M or £250 ,and the council must be accountable for EVERY penny as its not their money they are frittering away on their pet schemes.
