Just because people are in sharp suits doesn't mean they aren't sprouting the same gossip and speculation as everyone else. But I believe they are referring to HSBC are taking the office space portion of the retail quarter this is going to be built on the site currently occupied by the Grosvenor hence the current rush to demolish it.

I can't see John Lewis moving out to Meadowhall, they dominate the city centre but would just be another store out there.

For the sake of clarity I left out details. They carried, but didn't wear, hard hats, they had been walking the vacant land behind Next and in the cafe were viewing maps or plans on an ipad. Their discussion was framed in terms that indicated they had a direct interest in events rather than a little passing speculation. It could've been a bank they were talking about in regard to the city centre retail development. Whatever it was it didn't need a street level presence because they were talking about it only wanting national or international chains filling retail units on the ground floor.

It's still just rumour though.

Workers now employed at the Grosvenor House Hotel, is this the start of the demolition? At the same time Henry's is closed for refurbishment. This seems strange as I am sure that's part of the area that will be demolished to make way for the new retail area.

On Look North this evening there was a feature on Bradford's new shopping centre. Everyone seemed pleased and yet when they asked about Huddersfield's venture into investing in a new retail complex in the town centre it was reported that footfall had now returned to figures before the centre opened.

Said it before, this is Sheffield's opportunity to do something different and not just follow every other city and town. The continued increase in online shopping and the ever increasing strength of Meadowhall are warning signs to our great city not to just create another centre full of the usual high street brands.

Come on Sheffield you've got a blank piece of paper. Be brave and do something different that will make the Leeds and Manchesters green with envy.

Anyone holding their breath?

Rumours on other forums are that HSBC want the Grosvenor land for a new office, this may how the council get it done, small scale schemes when they have concrete plans for a small part adding up to their grand plan.

you are telling us all that Sheffield council has a grand plan :hihi::hihi::hihi:

I agree and think its a far far better idea than some big flashy grand scheme that comes to nothing.

Far more is happening now than ever was. Telephone House has now been fully renovated and converted, Milton House work has started, The new Primark/Cinema block is being built as we speak.

Hopefully if work is started on the Grosvenor that's another piece of the jigsaw completed.

Small steps are certainly better than nothing.

As for all this constant criticism and waiting for some "grand announcement" is getting tiresome. WORK IS HAPPENING. People just need to open their eyes and stop bleating on about other cities all the time.

Yes, Bradford may well have got its shiny new mall but whoopy doo. Exactly the same shops as we have in Sheffield anyway.
