Its all starting to smell a bit fishy :suspect:

Yea but I'm sure the council can get at least one more holiday out of it before making any decisions.

Is it two trips to the Mediterranean they've managed so far??

All in the name of 'finding a partner for the project':rolleyes::rolleyes:

and you can bet they will get their fingers and have it all built before works even begun on finishing the retail quarter in town.

It's not a lack of will to their pull fingers out that delaying the retail quarter, it's a lack of funding. Hopefully this announcement from Meadowhall will draw further investment into the area.

A cynical person would suggest back handers from Meadowhall to Councillors for constant delays and then the project shelved once the Meadowhall extension is complete.

I wouldnt though

The delays have had nothing to do with the council, and everything to do with private industry funding the development!

The council did lay the blame on the previous lot for lack of funding and such, but the developers shot back accusing the council of fiddle-arsing around for so long it delayed the project by years.

Lets be honest it has been dragging on since 2001, and Hammerson aren't some fly-by-night company, they're massive.

Development didn't go ahead because of the late 2000's recession, but building work should have been well underway before that hit anyway.

Would you expect any different from the developers apart from passing on the buck. The truth is they pulled out because they didn't think that the project was financially worth it. Remember that their decision came upon the back of the credit crunch. High street spending was down and the cost of borrowing went up.

No I totally agree, and I expect anyone else would have done the same.

but if the project was further down the line as it should have been they wouldn't have been in a position to so easily cut and run.

As it was there really wansn't much to loose, a few smashed down buildings but nothing major so it was the easiest decision they made all year.

The retail quarter project by the council has been shambolic, there is no other way to discribe it.the council are absolutely clueless! They have failed to nail this project from day one. Our town centre is that shambolic that we have empty shops everywhere and filling them with student paintings and other displays is not helping the city centre economy. I would not blame john lewis if they moved to meadowhall, who would blame them.

And blaming meadowhall, when Leeds and Manchester both have large shopping complex out of their town centre, yet still have a fantastic city centre retail offer, is wearing thin

The council should apologise for there lack of urgency and disastrous planning. If it wasnt for the university doing up old buildings ie old post office and building new buildings it might look worse.

The council have failed with the market, still haven't attracted a developer for the retail quarter, if they have, were is the master plan?

I drive to Donny which is a town and there city centre offering puts Sheffield to shame
