Agreed. Chesterfield's a really pleasant place to shop....Unhurried, cheap(er) parking, a good choice of shops (with a Debenhams opening shortly, I believe) and a dedicated market square and hall. Clean, traffic-free areas...few (if any) beggars hassling you...
Wardsbitter
Sheffield, by accident or design, lost its Victorian market buildings and faces serious problems with several city centre old buildings which survived the Blitz.
ormester101
well the council seem to have finally lost thier patience and telling Hammerson to provide information when the projects starting or lose the contract surely hammerson have breached a contract and it says stores are queueing up to come to sheffield city centre . Vague_Boy
but the new plan will cost less than half this apparently. Yet, it's only being scaled down in terms of size by 20%. So, how come there's a 50% saving if it's only going to be 20% smaller Fourstones? This project seems destined to remain an utter shambles. ormester101
id get someone in like westfield because hammerson are making excuses cutting sevenstone but extending the leeds one even though leeds are having a massive centre built already . Well about time. Hammersons are taking the mickey, it's about time Sheffield Council said enough is enough and kicked them into touch. As much as I liked the idea of the original Sevenstones, the scheme seems to have been substantially diluted and the way things are going when/if they do build it, it probably won't turn out to be much better than what we already have. Maybe the Council are better off waiting and getting into bed with another developer when the time is right. Regards Doom
Ousetunes
I've suggested it before. We don't need new development; the building for an indoor shopping centre already exists. With additional development, the Old Post Office in Fitzalan Square, lying derelict and unloved would be ideal. It looks the part, is an old, respected building and is in a wonderful location, especially if the Riverside Development and the Castle Regeneration is seriously going to happen. Develop that and let's have an outdoor market in Fitzalan Square and use what should be a lovely, traditional area of town. Add to that, tram-, bus- and even train-links, what are we waiting for? Regards Doom Strange isn't it, Hammerson drag their feet over the Sheffield development, then announce another one in Leeds, and just by co-incidence drop their objection to the proposed development at Meadowhall at the same time. I get the impression that Leeds was the target all along, and Sheffield was the fall-back in case it didn't happen. The Planning Dept obviously learned nothing from the St Paul's fiasco.
