flantastico
Do you mean recently, or since the War? There seemed to be a flurry of demolitions in the 60's & 70's, but are there any recent 'fantastic buildings' that have been demolished? Only the credit crunch saved the buildings covered by the Sevenstone scheme. If it wasn't for the crash, the whole area would have been demolished, even though it falls within the City Centre Conservation Area. As it is, the Trafalgar Works and the Kangaroo Works (near the Devonshire Cat) were demolished to make way for a car park which was never built. As others have pointed out before, the damage wrought to the city centre by Sheffield Council dwarfs any destruction the Luftwaffe managed. master_p
This whole saga (re Sevenstone) is a disgrace. We are 11 years down the line from this being planned and still not one brick has been laid and no revised plans have come forward I often wonder if any members of the Council have ever taken one step outside Sheffield to see what the shopping experience is like in other cities. If they did they would realise that our city centre is abysmal. I have been to many cities and towns around the country (Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Birmingham, York and so on) and say the city centre is inadequate is an understatement. It is not even comparative to some towns half the size of Sheffield. The problem is that the developer appears to have little interest in Sheffield and this coupled with Sheffield City Council's record re development (who thought 900 flats at Park Hill was a good idea) means the chances of us seeing anything re Sevenstone are slim to non-existent
metalman
Re the link that doesn't work. The Sevenstone website now seems to have been reduced to a one page placeholder with a vague indicator that something might happen at some unspecified point in the future. I'm not holding my breath. The Star website is reporting that SCC has given a deadline of 2014 by which time work must have started to take advantage of a government funding scheme. http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/business/sheffield-council-puts-deadline-on-retail-development-1-5090683

Candy A55
Ouch! the development was going to cost £600m, now they only want to spend £285m. This really is bargain basement stuff. Leeds Trinity on a tiny site cost £360m. To refurb St Pancras Station cost £800m. Do we really want it? Im sure they will chip more off as SCC mess them around some more. Look how St Pauls tower was sold to them, and what we eventually got. This scheme wont turn Sheffield centre around or even just save it. It will cement it firmly in its position as a place not worth a second glance for many years to come. Edited November 5, 2012 by Candy A55

The last thing we need is more out of town shopping developments. Foucus needs to be on the completing the city centre development. Next already has 7 outlets within the sheffield/barnsley/rotherham areas. Did we really need another one?
