MJbayley
Paying for parking is only an issue because the City Centre is so dire. It's like a slap in the face. If it was a decent place to visit paying for parking wouldn't be an issue. Agreed, free parking wouldn't work, i don't know any other cities that offer free parking. However, if the city's retail offering was improved, parking charges would be less of an issue.
dawny1970
errr planner1 you stated that parking fees underpinned parking services amongst others, would this be the parking services that made 150k plus a year profit from all those resident parking permits!??? If it was a decent place to visit paying for parking wouldn't be an issue. The Council have in fact recently reviewed all of the tariffs for their city centre parking. Many of them have been reduced and some of these are massive reductions. You can now park all day for £2 in certain car parks, which is less than a third of the £7+ it was before. ---------- Post added 30-05-2013 at 14:01 ---------- errr planner1 you stated that parking fees underpinned parking services amongst others, would this be the parking services that made 150k plus a year profit from all those resident parking permits!??? Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android The service within which Parking Services resides is called Transport Traffic and Parking Services. The surpluses from parking underpin (ie partly pay for) the activities of that service. No surplus = less activity = less jobs. The Council isn't like a private company where the profits go to the owners or shareholders. The Council's profits go into it's overall budgets. So, put very simply, less budget = less work to carry out = less jobs. Decision makers would need to consider whether this negative effect would be outweighed by any positive effects that free parking might provide. Even when parking is free, there are till costs assocaited with providing it. Business rates on car parks, maintenance and enforcment if you want it to be time limited waiting so that the parking spaces are not filled all day by commuters. commuters. If the income is not there to cover these costs, it has to come from elsewhere, which means cutting something, which usually has an impact on jobs. There are 12 spaces in that car park. ---------- Post added 30-05-2013 at 15:09 ---------- I would not class 6 of those car parks as being in the city centre - they are more like Shalesmoor. Within the Inner Relief Road. Some are in Wicker area which most people would agree as city centre.
