Do sheffield council know that there is life outside the city center ,and there is more to sheffield than just what lies inside the ring road.

Sounds to me that they don't. It's all city center, city center, at the expense of the rest of the city.

Do the council advertise these car parks as being suitable for city centre shopping or are they just car parks in the city centre, okay maybe not a 50 yard shuffle from the town hall but still in what I'd consider to be part of the centre. I'd imagine that if you were shopping in the market or wanted to have a wander down by the canal basin then those car parks are in a reasonably good location. Or how about if you wanted to spend some time sitting in the public gallery of the courts or wanted to browse the Space centre shop

If I go to a new town or city and park in what the council promote as a city centre car park then thats what I expect it to be, not a car park quite near the city centre.

The car parks in question may be fine for the canal basin or old markets but i wouldn't fancy lugging bags of shopping from the new markets to them.

You don't define city centres by what parts of it have recognisable High St shops in them.

The Wicker is very much part of the city centre as are other peripheral areas like St Vincent's, the Quays, the CIQ and West Bar. City centres are complex places and often have different zones which cater or specialise in the various functions and services that the centre provides. You can't define it in such simplistic terms as what shops it has.

This is in theory a shopping thread, relating to a development that may or may not happen.

The cheap car parks were raised by someone wanting to show what the council is doing to encourage visitors/shoppers to the city centre. None of the car parks mentioned are anywhere near the proposed Sevenstone development.

The Wicker in my opinion is adjacent to but not in the city centre.

I've lived here all my life and always considered Wicker to be part of the city centre.

Of the car parks I listed there are some which are convenient for the Castle Market area. Willey Street is about 300yds away from it. Most people would consider the castle market as being in the city centre and you can park all day within 300yds for 2 quid.

People on here have suggested that the way forward for parts of the city centre is to have more independant shops, eateries etc. Well, that's what you have already got on Wicker.

Likewise I've lived here for all my 44 years and have never considered The Wicker to be part of the city centre and nor have I heard anyone else refer to it as city centre until yesterday.

Castle market I would agree is city centre but would say the cut off point is the Lady's Bridge area.

I must admit it seems odd that the council have reviewed parking charges at the same time as the new market building is nearing completion.

They have designated car parks near the old soon to be closed market as cheap stay yet left car parks near to the new markets as more expensive. How does this encourage more visitors?

As another poster said all the cheap car parks are north of the city centre; several in the middle and south have been ignored. Why?

OK here it is, the first Sevenstone thread. The brand new face of Sheffield. As we all know, there has been a lot of talk about Sheffield's new retail quarter (once aptly named NRQ), but now that the new name has been announced, why not place all related thoughts and stories here and put previous threads to the archives?

Something tells me that now a corporate decision has been made, the name Sevenstone is here to stay and is likely to become entrenched in the Sheffield mindset (give it time!)

Share your stories... here are my initial random thoughts.

1. Firstly, I cannot wait to see the official plans!!! How exciting, our very own high profile shopping centre to rival the best!

2. The chatter on the boards (SF included!) is bound to take an advanced leap as the scheme develops, from demolition of existing structures that get in the way to construction!

3. Can't wait for the new John Lewis, Prada Sheffield, Hugo Boss, or even Selfridges (hmmm, I know Selfidges has probably been done to death here)

4. Sevenstones - How 'fitting' (pardon the pun) - in an age of Size Zero. A headline I am surprised the Sheffield Star have not yet to run!

5. Size Zero Sheffield - does size matter?

6. All the way to the first shop opening.... although a number of years a plenty away, what brand stores does Sheffield want to see? (no more Poundland)

So in conclusion to the beginnings of a fantastic thread, here is to the Size Zero Centre (Sorry - start again), Sevenstone Sheffield, long may this new life prosper, engage us and delight us in this consumer driven age............................ I can't wait!

Your comment's here!.............................................

You may have to wait just a teensy bit longer.

More interesting reading on Sevenstone here-

If t'Wicker is part of the city centre then London Road and Eccie Road are.

Yeah because when I decide to go shopping but want to skip the big retail chain stores the first place I think of heading for an afternoons shopping is on Wicker.

Planner1 has officially lost the plot.

The area defining the city centre is contained within this link to the councils website, click on City Centre development.pdf.

There is no hard and fast boundary defining the city centre. The point is, we are talking about city centre shopping and the Wicker is not city centre shopping. City centre shopping is basically The Moor, Fargate, High St, West St, Division St and Castle Market area.

Suggesting people would happily park at the Wicker to go shopping in Sheffield centre is like suggesting people would happily park halfway to Meadowhall to shop on the Wicker.

In my post #716, I mention three car parks where prices have been significantly reduced, which are very close to the proposed Sevenstone development.

The main car park for the new markets develppment is the "Kit Kat" car park, currently operated by APCOA. SCC can't influence their prices.

SCC don't have any car parks in the immediate vicinity of the new Markets since the Rockingham Way car park was closed for demolition by the owners, from whom the Council leased it. The parking review included making the Rockingham way car park a low cost one, but the closure came along earlier than expected. The nearest SCC car park to the Markets would be Wellington St, where prices have been reduced substantially.

Not only shoppers use car parks.

Commuters and people visiting or doing business business use them too.

SCC's new pricing structure allows flexibility and offers people the opportunity to take advanatage of very low prices, if they don't mind parking on the periphery of the city centre. There are plenty of people who work, visit or do business in the centre who may not mind a short walk if it saves them a lot in parking fees.

The parking in the very centre is dearer as there is stronger demand, but you can now stay as long as you like.

And, as I said, it shows Wicker within the City Centre

Has anybody actually been on Wicker since they made driving into it a puzzle with a penalty fine for failure?

If you cannot navigate the Wicker without it puzzling you, then I suggest you need to resit your test :)

I have been down there, many times in fact, and I never seem to have any issues with the bus gates and/or finding a parking space.
