Jonny5
The financial crisis has hit the North harder than the South, with a lot of jobs in the North more dependant on government spending. When you add that to the fact that Sheffield is surrounded by cities with strong commercial city centres, such as Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham, as well as taking Meadowhall in into account, the blame for which can be laid at of successive councils. It's not hard to see why the developers would put their eggs into the Croydon basket. Sheffield is surrounded by stronger commercial Cities due to decades of poor planning & investment. We continue to slide down the footfall table. By your rationale it will never get done because at the rate Sheffield is going downhill there will always be somewhere that is better commercially placed than us. No by my rational it will get done when the economy picks up, as I stated earlier.

hackey lad
Hammerson have been given more time to commit. It was reported in a small article tucked away in the business section of the Star. We haven't been told how much more time. It's just an open ended thing. Hammerson want more of their risk covering by SCC / the taxpayer. They have enough on their plate at the moment what with Leeds and Croydon and so will sit tight until SCC beg steal or borrow the money Hammerson want. This development is very much one on the backburner for Hammerson. In any event they have already stated it wont start until at best 2017/2018- if they get the money they want. Good effort SCC. May as well close this thread. why havent the council spoken about this? they are supposed to be working for the people of sheffield and the lack of communication is laughable . come on mothersole ,bramall and dore ,inform the people as to what is happening if you know and if you dont know you should be ashamed Edited June 12, 2013 by hackey lad

Its a well known cynical way of burying bad news.

And you're right. Their lack of communication is laughable. I found it irritating and a display of arrogance before, but now its just laughable. Dan_Ashcroft
then we spend 20 years trying to catchup butvwill be hamstrung by the council and stupid planning!! Posted from Sheffieldforum.co.uk App for Android The high street will never recover. 1 in 5 shops is expected to close in the next 5 years. City centres will become just cafes, restaurants, bars + a few high end artisan shops. Shopping will generaly be done online with big out of town quasi-wearhouses for bulky item pick-ups. Sadly you're right. Even more sadly, it'll take SCC 5 years to wake up to this, by which time the city centre will look 5 times worse than it does now.
