The Ratells

Influenced by Editors, Kings Of Leon, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol. The Ratells are making a welcome return to Penelopes.

The Ratells began life in March 2008 as The Regulars, a young 5 piece indie band inspired by the vibrant Sheffield music scene.

From the first gig at a local sports club in May 2008, the band quickly established themselves as real crowd pleasers with their exuberant, high energy sets. Described by one critic as “post punk indie pop”, a crucial element in the Ratells’ success is the band’s infectious sound which reveals a lyrical and melodic strength which elevates them above their many contemporaries. Some of their early classics can be found on the band’s much loved “Through The Cellar Door” EP recorded during their first studio foray in the autumn of 2008.

“Through The Cellar Door” attracted the attention of a wider audience and led to offers of gigs in York, Manchester and Leeds, a session slot on Radio Sheffield’s Raw Talent and glowing reviews in the local music media, as well as a host of legendary nights at some of Sheffield’s most popular venues such as The Boardwalk, The Plug and the O2 Academy.

The early summer of 2009 saw the recording of the band’s second EP “Pretty Girls and Wandering Eyes” and the first under the new name The Ratells, adopted to avoid confusion with other “Regulars” in various corners of the globe. “Pretty Girls And Wandering Eyes” was launched on the 12th June 2009 at a frenzied sold-out launch night at the Sheffield O2 Academy,

Linear North

Recently signed to Sharp Nine Records, Linear North are Certainly a band to watch

Taking there name from the housing estate in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Linear North's line up was formed in June 2007 by school friends James Sargeant (bass), Bal Makriel (drums), James McGowen (vocals) and Ben Lines (guitar) Chris McBride joined on guitar in April 2008. Linear North play an amalgamation of space rock and classic indie built on a foundation of bass and drum driven grooves. They have developed a mesmeric and haunting sound on record which is transferred into pure rock adrenalin live. They are a band to be seen whose music will leave the listener awe struck at its beauty and power in equal measure. The bands main influences include Verve, The Stone roses, Campag Velocet, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Love and the Cure
