GrannyGranny
You can't go wrong with a Fiesta. Cheap to run & insure. No major reliability issues. Not that bad to drive and still look ok. or a Micra http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201008353491734/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/500/price-to/2000/page/6/postcode/s24ap/quicksearch/true/radius/10?previous=%2Fsearch%2Fused%2Fcars%2Fpostcode%2Fs24ap%2Fradius%2F10%2Fprice-from%2F500%2Fprice-to%2F2000%2Fpage%2F6%2Fsort%2Fpriceasc%2Fquicksearch%2Ftrue&logcode=p

Amaranthus
Thanks everyone. I really like the Suzuki, it's purple as well (I'm such a girl ), so hopefully it'll drive okay and I can get it tomorrow, otherwise it's back to the drawing board. I have a new 10 reg citroen grand picasso now an it is far too complicated I tell you to many gadgets. But really handy or luggin our male lab in and the 7 seats for kids and friends and who ever else.I would give it up for a fiesta lol, but kids and dog come as standard hehe

Amaranthus
Hw about an escort you can get quiet a good one for the money you have. OR a corsa . Yeah, a Corsa has always been my first choice but they keep getting snapped up before I can get to them. A lot of people on autotrader don't seem to answer their phones either (I've tried at different times of day/ evening).
EmilyM
I've got an old (Mark 4) Fiesta. Its really easy to drive, no problems in the 7 months I have owned it. Mines a 1.8L Diesel, but you might want a smaller engine if its your first car due to insurance costs. I see loads of old Fiestas driving around of a similar age to mine and some even older. Also, it was pretty good in the snow. I had a Polo, it wasn't very stable when cornering, felt like it was going to tip over sometimes. I'm not sure if this is typical of Polos or just the one I drove!
