whitehorses
Hi, Following on from my original 'Where can I get birth details for free' thread, I have received help from a couple of very nice forummers. I think I would like to go further with my own search, but looking at all the sites, I have become a little jaded, with free searches, and credits and charges. So, could you recommend me the best site in terms of value for money and being easy to understand etc.I'm not stupid, but don't have endless time to wade through advertising and bumph etc.!! Thanks in advance !
Wisbech
These are free sites that may help http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl http://www.genuki.org.uk/ http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp If your families are Sheffield based, try this site http://www.sheffieldindexers.com
Rivelin6
I think http://www.findmypast.co.uk is one of the best and it has 1911 census on it too. (however the most recent census is very expensive) http://www.ancestry.co.uk is the best for the range of records. Sometimes it's worth having two different ones because one may have missed a record or mistranscribed it. Other Sheffield sites are http://www.sheffieldrecordsonline.org.uk/ and http://www.sheffieldfhs.org.uk/ If you have any problems I'm willing to help. Thanks in advance ! You may already be aware but there is free access to Ancestry at Sheffield libraries. Trade directories held in libraries can be very usefull. Beware though it can become addictive !!!

I have been amazed how helpfull others have been on sites such as Sheffield Indexers, FHS and Records on Line as well as staff at various local studies libraries and record offices. It isn't initially but after a time you start getting a feel for a family and they almost become like your own- a bit like adoption really:D I remember researching a German family called Ruppensberg and when I found a village in Germany with the same name and someone sent me a copy of the family history via post I was that excited I almost forgot it wasn't my own family:hihi: In Sheffield anyway you often find connections with your own family whether it be a name or place and that gives you some interest in the subject. Up to date records aren't on there at present. It's only the ones that have been transcribed. I think that Free BMD Birth Records are up till about 1940 ish.
