Titanic99
Just to prove that the Tories are as nasty as ever, we have the Shadow Home secretary recorded as saying that the proprietors of Bed and Breakfast accommodation should have the right to reject Gay couples. Just quite how he intends administering equality legislation is a mystery to me, what next will he allow them to reject people who like a drink. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/default.stm

HeadingNorth
Like most people who try to deprive gays equal rights If you care to actually listen to what he said, he's not trying to deny rights. He's trying to give homeowners the right to decide for themselves who comes into their home. He also makes very clear that out-and-out business should not be allowed to pick and choose. Where do you think the line should be drawn? Should private homeowners be forced to accept gay people as friends and invite them into their home? Should businesses be allowed to discriminate against whomever they please? Or should it fall somewhere in between?
SHYTOT
I am far more concerned that 3 Labour MPs and ex ministers were caught trying to elicit massive bribes in exchange for introducing laws that would benefit those handing over the cash. By Titanic's logic it just goes to prove that Labour is as corrupt as ever.
scoop
How will this be policed? How will the B&B owners know who is gay or not. Are we all to be issued with an ID style card stating our sexuality, how will the government assess and assign our sexuality for this purpose? I think people are trying to make more of his comment than he meant, but he was still wrong.
Cyclone
He's trying to give homeowners the right to decide for themselves who comes into their home.Should private homeowners be forced to accept gay people a How about if it were Muslims, or Blacks, or Irish, would it be okay to deny them the service that a B&B sells? How about if it's the corner shop, is that a real business, or would you allow them to discriminate as well? The law as it stands is correct; Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007 - no-one should be refused goods or services on the grounds of their sexuality. HeadingNorth
A bed and breakfast is an out an out business. But it is also a private home; at least in the case that reached the news lately.
Wildcat
But it is also a private home; at least in the case that reached the news lately. It is not very private when they advertise and give a daily rate for people to come and stay in their rooms.
