Why pubs are closing

Recommended Posts

New Labour cultural Marxists hate the local British pub, and are doing everything within their power to eradicate them with excessive red tape, increases in beer duties and the smoking ban etc.

The Communist's dont want working people to socialise properly in a real face to face way, exchange ideas and be a threat to the system. They know this from their own experience, as Lenin and most of his cronies developed their own ideas and organisation in exactly the same way when in exile in the cafe's of Geneva.

Oh my days!

Are you absolutely sure you're not just observing a phenomenon and making it fit your paranoia?

Call me an old cynic but I can't help but feel increased beer duties were intended, alongside extended opening hours, to increase revenue from pubs - not as you seem to think - to eliminate it.

Not a fan of Wetherspoon pubs but I can see why they appeal to a certain sector.

However, I do like the Bessemer on Leopold Street in town, former Fountain Bar (and probably better known as The Pig & Whistle). This is a Smith and Jones pub (I kid you not) and I think they've got the blend just about right: decent food, decent ale and a pleasant atmosphere. The price is spot-on too, very good value for money.

They also have the Psalter Tavern (and IIRC, a pub on Cambridge Street). Nicer than Wetherspoon's if you ask me.

Agree-one of the best pubs intown.

It was under Margaret Thatcher that saw hundreds of Sheffield pubs close down particularly in the East end. There were so many pubs that closed between 1980 and 1987 in Attercliffe as they turned this industrial powerhouse into a rubble desert.

Sheffield may have seen a number of pubs close in the 1980s, but I bet that figure is infinitesimal compared to the tens of thousands of pubs which have shut down under this present government.

The pub closures in Sheffield under Maggie were the collateral damage of the, as you put it - turning this industrial powerhouse into a rubble desert.

I think you may well be wrong. If you go to any of the former industrial regions of the UK, like Glasgow, the West Midlands, South Wales it was a similar story as they waged war against a productive economy in favour of promoting one of buyng shares and property speculation.

Not wishing to argue but I would love to compare the actual figures between pubs closing under Thatcher and Major and those which have closed under Blair and Brown.
