The shooting is between 3m and 7m on the video. The helicopter zooms in quite closely on the 8 people walking around. You can see the cameras over the shoulders of the cameramen and not aiming at anyone. Those in the helicopter convince themselves its a RPG (rocket propelled grenade?). They radio for permission to "engage", fly around for a while longer then shoot.

 

Why are they so dumb and trigger happy that they immediately assume these people are carrying weapons? They had plenty of time. They have an excellent zoom facility. If they exercised just a little care then they would not have made such a tragic mistake.

Al Jazeera has shown at least one beheading that I know of and which took place a few years back. Very little was shown of it on local channels here. Just the hostage surrounded by the executioners before the act was done.

 

I dont imagine that any news media in this part of the world would show such a thing anyway. We may not be the epitome of the ideal civilization but we've moved on from medieval public displays of barbarity which however unfortunately, still seem to to enthrall and entertain our middle east bretheren

Good to see this topic has been posted in SF btw. However, here are my predictions for what we will see develop in this thread:

- plenty of examples of cognitive dissonance in action from apologists for the murder of Iraqi civilians;

- very little discussion about the issues that are raised by this incident and the way it has come to light.
