sheff50
I thought we were a 'democracy'. Whats it got to do with that very rich member of the 'ruling classes' ?
mj.scuba
I think it is called Constituational Monarchy.
Funky_Gibbon
Always been the person who wins the election, but theoretically she could choose who she wanted. In theory yes but no monarch will ever test that theory because 24 hours later the country would be in anarchy with mass protests. It'd be the end of the monarchy. Chris_Sleeps
It's a daft hangover from the Civil War. The monarchy was stripped of the power but were allowed to remain in the ceremony of government. It's utterly insane really. The State Opening of Parliament is equally as pointless.

Not sure if the end of the monarchy would result if she chose to invite someone other than the pm. Do you really think us monarchists are so few in number that we would see the country without the Royal family? Dream on.
Fivetide
it is a damn blessing that we're protected from the worst vices of a true democracy by the happy circumstance of our history selecting, breeding and financing a family whose fortunes are now dependent on them behaving themselves and as far as they can, making sure the gutterslimes don't take the wee too much. don't forget - the moment they step out of line, someone comes in on a 'repupublican' vote and kicks em in the crown jewels. god save the queen and prince phil! Chris_Sleeps
Yeah - just another British tradition to get thrown on the scrap heap. Indeed. Clinging to a tradition that makes no sense is silly, in my humble opinion. We're all equal in this democracy, are we not?

So what traditions do make sense? They are all founded on ancient times. Let's scrap the lot of them and have done. But then that would be a few things less to attract tourists who spend a great deal of money spectating at such events. Depends what you mean by equal and democracy.
