Saddler
Been to Yugoslavia when it was called that country and if you are holidaying next to the Adriatic sea it is beautiful. Take some (or buy some) snorkels and goggles

purdyamos
I know parts of Croatia very well, but I've not been to Istria. I always fancied going to Rovinj, it seems to have an artistic ambience, that's just down the road from Porec. Istria's Italian heritage is very pronounced, I believe (it was part of Italy for a chunk of the 20th centruy), and the interior is well worth a drive around as the countryside is like Tuscany. I'd recommend an excursion to Pula as it has an impressive Roman amphitheatre. You're also nearby the Brijuni Islands which were Tito's private hideout and are now a national park. The locals don't expect anyone to try the language, they know it's hard for non-slavs, so English, German and Italian are widely spoken. Is there anything particular you want to know about the country or region?
Astraeus
This will be of little help to you as it doesn't concern the areas you're looking at but I spent a week in Dubrovnik last year. The weather was fantastic, the town is over-commercialised but still very pretty. Language-wise, we never encountered anyone who wasn't competent in English or German (both of which we speak) so there wasn't a problem.

One of the times I flew to Dubrovnik we were put on an 'Astraeus Airlines' plane. I'd never heard of them before or since. I presume you're no relation? I hope not, it's one of the only times I've had food poisoning! I went To Dub several times, and luckily managed to see it before it became really swamped by cruise ship crowds and tourist tat again. The ethos of the people was (and hopefully still is) really special though I guess it's harder to spot now it's so busy. I could just do with a week or two pootling about Istria myself. I don't suppose Thai's got room in their luggage?
