FRIDAY 7TH MAY

THE HARLEY

11PM-3.30AM (AT LEAST)

TAX: £3

Some months, a line-up sorts itself out that's so strong you want to write all the hype in capitals. Leading from the front for May, we give you the Steel City debut of none other than Scratcha DVA. Butter-smooth DJ and flamboyant host of Rinse FM's breakfast show, Scratcha was a member of grime crew Aftershock alongside Terror Danjah and has knocked out riddims for Wiley and his fellow Roll Deep heavyweights Killa P and Flow Dan. But over the past year, it's his part in flipping house music on its head that's seen Scratcha's fame rising across the UK and further afield.

Along with scene spearhead and sometime partner-in-crime Roska (who tore up DQ for the Krooked boys last month), Geeneus and Cooly G, Scratcha’s been instrumental in developing the ruling UK funky sound. The genre's practitioners have taken components of deep and Afro-inflected house, as well as echoes of Chicago and Detroit, messed with their DNA, and fused them with the raw carnival swagger and low-end pressure that runs through UK bass music from bashment to garage to dubstep. In the process, some of the fiercest party material of the last decade has been let loose. Scratcha's "Jelly Roll" EP from last Autumn was an instant sell-out, with the follow up smash "Natty / Ganja" being picked up by Hyperdub and caned by everyone from Kode 9 and Ikonika to Marcus Nasty, Oneman and Jackmaster. He absolutely slayed it in Leeds earlier this year and promises to do the same here in Sheffield. DO NOT MISS!!!

Taking the co-pilot's seat this month is another guy deservedly on the up. Busting into view last spring with the inclusion of his "No Charisma" on Cooly G's mix for FACT, Martin Kemp (no, not that one) has since seen his credentials firmly cemented with productions on Blunted Robots and Hold Box Flat, and an ace remix of grime producer Royal T's Nintendo-sampling "1Up" on No Hats, No Hoods. Splicing the spaciousness of dubstep with some UKG flex and a dash of tropical sizzle, check his mixes for Hyponik and Xlr8r for proof that his DJ chops more than measure up.

Doing our best to keep up, the RD rezzies will be turning out some house, techno and cumbia flavours early doors, while getting well excited about the guests.

£3 on the door. You know it makes sense. See you there.

Cheers man we're pretty excited about this one!

:)

Please note our amended opening times - High Places are playing the Harley earlier in the eve so we're not starting til 11pm (obvs some may feel hardcore enough to do both events, which will get you props for staying power if nothing else!).

We're down to one resident DJ for this one, so we're hyped to announce that we've added WEBSTARR to the line-up alongside Scratcha and Martin Kemp.

As well as playing the finest UKG and funky on his Melody One Radio slot, he's been bringing the likes of Ben UFO, Youngsta and Spyro to Hull for his own Forefront night. Last seen in these parts heating the floor for Marcus Nasty, Ben UFO and Midland for Leeds' Tropical party, we're thrilled to be putting him on for what is already one of our strongest line-ups to date...

Tonight!!! Fresh hype in that Resident Advisor has made this one of their 3 recommended nights in the whole North of the UK this weekend – given that it’s one of the largest and most popular sites for club music features and listings in the world we’re thrilled they’ve shouted out about us…

Trust us, you don’t want to miss this… :)
