callippo
WOMAN died when the Islamic head dress she was wearing was caught in the axle of a go-kart she was driving yesterday. The 26-year-old Muslim had been enjoying a day out with family at the Port Stephen's Go-Kart track in New South Wales when her hijab became caught up at high speed. Paramedics said the Sydney woman suffered severe neck injuries and went into cardiac arrest after the hijab's material tightened rapidly around her throat. Shocked onlookers freed her from the kart and paramedics managed to revive her before she was airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. She died later. Police seized the go-kart late yesterday afternoon as a WorkCover officer arrived on the scene to begin an investigation. Port Stephens duty officer Inspector Brian Larkham said: "While she was riding somehow part of her head-dress has got caught in the mechanism of the go-kart and tightened around her throat." this is Australia, but I seem to remember somewhere in the UK some years ago, a woman died in similar circumstances - not a headscarf, but some loose-fitting clothing like a sari -got caught in some machinery on a tourist train ride, and she died. there's no way anybody in a developed country like Australia with a responsible attitude by international standards towards health and safety would let somebody drive a go-kart wearing a normal scarf. There would obviously be too much potential for an accident. Remember Isadora Duncan? The scarf she was wearing got caught in the wheel of a car she was driving, breaking her neck. but when it's a headscarf, and the person wearing it is a Muslim, it would seem people are less likely to raise an objection - even when the idea is to protect the person wearing it from injury or worse - than when it's just anybody turning up in a 'normal' scarf. Of course in 'backward countries' like Scotland they are a bit more blasé about such things: http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-76388703.html

rubydazzler
Isadora Duncan?I thought of that terrible accident straight away. It was long before any of our times though. She was a famous dancer of the 1920s, iirc.
Tony
Well that's just another one of those 'stuff happens' incidents. Absolutely awful for those close but absolutely nothing of any consequence for anyone else
