Life without oxygen

Recommended Posts

Did you notice this sentence in the article

"The eggs hatched successfully in a completely oxygen-free environment."

?

Yes, like the 'oxygen free' environment in the Dead Sea and at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea -

- which of course both contain water, which is one third made of oxygen. So when they are saying an "oxygen-free environment" they are talking about the lack of dissolved free oxygen in the water (oxygenated water) not the water itself but it's quite possible that oxygen is being released from the water through electrolysis. That's my theory anyway and its as good as any.

But you are entirely misunderstanding the function of oxygen in the biological system.

Molecular oxygen is (surprisingly enough) an oxidant. It is used to oxidise other molecules to release energy.

If you need to reduce water to get the oxygen, then you need to put in energy to do so, and it simply is not going to work.
