Do We Take Offence Too Easily?

Did you see the story the other day about Chubby Brown being offended by a woman swearing at him in a car park?

The adult comedy entertainer told a court yesterday he was 'gobsmacked' at the bad language used by the 21-year-old woman during the row

There have been several celebrity "Roasts" on telly over the past few days and last night was William Shatners` turn.

The show was good, it was funny and close to the bone and the audience were roaring with laughter at all the fat and wig and bad actor jokes that were going Shatners way.

A few nights ago we Brits had a roast of Chris Tarrant.

Jimmy Carr stood and introduced Tarrants Tiswas colleague, Sally James, saying that she was like a fine wine as she aged, and like most fine wines she had turned to vinegar.

The audience were horrified and hissed and booed Carr and he had to defend himself and looked very uncomfortable afterwards. The rest of the show was to say the least, tame, certainly tamer than the American versions and you could feel the frustration of the celebs as they had to hold back on their insults.

I was talking to the OH afterwards and she said its because people are far too easily offended and reminded me of Carrs` joke about the injured soldiers who are returning from war zones, Carr said that we would have a cracking disabled olympic team and got into a lot of trouble because of it, in spite of the fact that he was simply repeating what the troops themselves were saying.

ARE we too easily offended? Do you think that TV and radio and...well, EVERYTHING has become bland because of the fear of people being offended?

I know of people who will go to a lot of trouble to watch an entire programme just so they can be horrified by what they saw and wont hesitate to complain about it.

What do you think? Do these people simply exist to cause trouble? Or is it simple stupidity? I mean, if you dont wish to see or read or hear something then dont go to the trouble to experience it in the first place, yes?

Any road up, DISCUSSORILLKILLYA!

I think Jimmy Carr exists to cause trouble.

Perhaps I have too much of a sensitive disposition but his 'joke' about rape was just vicious and nasty. If someone has to resort to plumbing the depths of bad taste then they're not just unfunny; they are sick.

Genuine comedians don't have to resort to tapping into the worst aspects of an audience. Carr's just looking for noteriety, he isn't clever enough to be funny and repected for his craft.

Me and my bloke watched the 100 greatest stand-up comedians thing that was on over the weekend and I found myself laughing at Chubby Brown, Jethro and Chris Rock before thinking "Ooh, I'm sure I'm supposed to be outraged and disgusted really"

I remember laughing at a really funny joke by Bernard Manning once.

I've never laughed at Jim Davidson. He manages to be offensive without being the least bit funny.

I don't know about you but i don't find half of those comedians funny... Many comedians in the vein of Chubby brown rely too much on the audience being so close to offended or having their offence sense lightly tickled by a stream of so called 'profane' words. For individuals such as me who are near impossible to offend and don't find swear words offensive in the slightest we simply don't find their material funny. Their swearing doesn't make me go "oh my... lol.... did he really just say that? :o "

But he says that when he puts his helmet and silly suit on it is part of an act, he is performing.

Would someone think it OK to walk up to Robert de Niro and start asking him if he was "talking to me" etc?

Davidson and Manning are as offensive when not "performing", I don't know about Royston Vasey because I've only ever seen short interviews with him out of character.

Agree with all of that Rioja, one of the funniest things Ive ever heard was spoken by Bernard Manning, about a girl so sick on drugs she 'threw up her own pelvis'!

Chubby Brown can be hilarious in the right environment with the right audience and equally Chris Rock can be sidesplittingly funny, although I cringe when I hear some of the things he says about white folks, although he's even handed and slags off crap black ones too.

Jim Davidson? Comedy tumbleweed...when was saying the word 'Chalky' in a funny accent amusing, it's like watching the same road accident Rudolph Walker was involved in, in Love Thy Neighbour and the use of the word 'honky' to describe white people..it just dont cut it!

Chris Rock- I LOVE it when he tears white people to bits, theres no way can I be offended because I`m usually too busy laughing and damn-well agreeing with him!

I only discovered this bloke about six months ago and I think he`s brilliant.
