Tony
One proposal that's been made recently is that the person who runs your local police force could be elected by the local citizens rather than appointed by the Home Office in London. The principal is that you would vote for the person who you think has their priorities in line with what are seen as issues relevant to their area. You can elect somebody else if you don't like how it's going. Would it make policing more accountable? Would Sheffield have different needs and priorities to say Barnsley? What do you think? fridayfeelin
With the way our Force has gone up in ranks, I'd like our CC to remain the same thanks!! We're not doing too bad and we are not nowhere near the worst force, which the HO state is GMP and Nottinghamshire!
Rupert_Baehr
I thought the proposal was that people would be able to elect a Police Commissioner? I suspect you would have a Police Commissioner (elected) AND a Chief Constable (appointed) but be allowed to pay for both.
GordonBennet
There's only any point in having an election if the public who vote are well-informed and don't act out of bigotry and personal prejudice. So the answer is no!
HeadingNorth
It seems to work in the USA, but I don't like it. You get chiefs of police who are politically motivated, and I don't want one. I want a chief of police whose sole and only interest is in reducing overall crime levels.
