oldprune
Isn't it time that the EU stepped in over the French rail strike? As if the damage being done to Europe by the Icelandic volcano wasn't enough, travel is being needlessly disrupted by a French rail strike. A responsible union would have reacted to the travel chaos by suspending their action, but of course a sensible union in France doesn't exist. Shouldn't the EU be acting now to get French trains running in order to counter the current travel problems?
HeadingNorth
Whether they should or not is a moot point, because anything imposed by the EU would simply be ignored by the people striking.
Guest
Since when did the EU have control of the French rail system? Why would the EU be able to do anything? Would you expect the EU to get involved the next time train workers strike over here?

If British train workers called a wildcat strike because they spotted a chance to take advantage of some natural disaster in order to blackmail everybody, the unions would be bankrupted by the courts and people would go back to work or else be arrested for contempt. The French are under no such constraints.
Stormy
Why should the EU meddle in French business? Let the French deal with French issues, it should be of no concern to unelected beurocrats from other countries.

Perhaps because there are thousands of EU citizens marooned around Europe and needing to get home. The EU should not be a slave to French politics. IMO someone should be kicking backsides and doing what is necessary to get people home. If that requires forcing French Railways to co-operate, then that is fine. I am puzzeld as to why EU citizens being "stranded" in a country should be a reason for beaurocrats from other countries to step in and tell the French how to run their internal affairs. (pity we dont do the same when it comes to getting better workers rights for our own)

Perhaps in that case we should be asking why the EU should be bailing out the Greek economy when it is purely an internal affair.
