Why was Brown urging stranded tourists to make for Madrid?

Recommended Posts

Why did Gordon Brown go on Radio One's Newsbeat programme yesterday and tell stranded Brits to travel to Madrid.

He said that people stuck in Asia, Africa and America could land in the Spanish capital before being taken back to the UK in coaches laid on by the Government.

"We're putting on coaches from Madrid," he said. "There's 100 already there in Madrid to do it."

But as thousands of delayed travellers arrived in the city, there was no sign of the promised coaches. And it appears that they don't exist.

He said it this morning so Little chance that those from America, Asia will be there yet, the ones that are in madrid are mostly from mainland resorts, those were told to make thier way to the ports.

What annoys me massively about this issue is that the government is helping wealthy and comfortable people who can afford to go on early spring breaks to foreign countries, with help from warships and other government sponsored help.

People who can afford to do this should be able to pay their own way home. I will not be able to afford a holiday abroad for several years because I am now on a lower salary. Why should I pay for better off people to have all this help.

But doesn't saying 100 coaches are already there usually mean that there are 100 coaches already there, or are you already taking into account the Brown lie factor?

Those stranded could equally say, those who can work but don't get weekly benefits paid by me, so now I'm stranded why can't I get help.

Also the easter holiday for some might be the only break they can get, and just to add nowadays it can be cheaper to holiday abroad than in the UK:D

They could be there ready for the arrivals, doubt they gonna park up outside hours before they are due.

You maybe right, I maybe right, suppose it's a question best answered tomorrow when those particular travellers have landed.

Apparently according to BBC News the coaches have only just left the UK and won't be in Madrid for a few days.

It just looks like Brown just made a slip up or misunderstood or was misinformed about the status of the coaches.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Do you think that just before and election the Prime Minister is going to lie to people and get them to travel to Madrid for no reason? I'm sure that would go down well.

To be honest I think they are doing far too much to help, but then they do all this and still get stick. They just can't win at a time like this.
