Glass everywhere in our local open area - bring on the 16-18 yo!

Recommended Posts

Following on from a conversation I had earlier in which we were shocked at the amount of broken glass littering our local open space, we considered (if we ruled the world) bringing in compulsary employment of unemployed 16 -18 year olds for community tidying up.

What do you think? Should/could work be enforced for 16-18 year olds in order for them to draw benefit? Would it benefit the local community? Would it give the youngsters a feeling of work ethic/having colleagues/doing something worthwhile? Would it help them get jobs in the future? Would it provide some of them the experience of being supervisors?

Would it be against their Human Rights? (having to work for their legally-entitled benefits, doing 'humiliating work') What would happen if they didn't turn up for work? Could their benefit be stopped? How about if they said they were sick? Or if they just couldn't be bothered?

Is there any way to make 16 - 18 year olds (or anyone, come to that, it just seemed to make sense to target the youngest and thus most inexperienced in the workplace) work for their benefit? How about if they only had to put, say, 8 hours a week in on this scheme?

Would it help them? Help us (society)?

Comments would be interesting!
