markfor
Dont see the need for any other buildings being erected on site? It's not a visitor centre as such, just a shelter round the back for school classes. have a look at the video, there's an illustration of what's being built. Nagel
I went past Shepherd Wheel today and found it open for the first time since its renovation. I was worried that they might have tarted it up and tidied it beyond all recognition, as it was always a jumbled mess before. I shouldn't have worried, they've done a great job and it still has that atmosphere that the last workers had just left the building. Unfortunately the main bearing on the water wheel is in for repair at the moment so it's not running, but it's being fixed and I'm looking forward to going back and seeing it running. Nagel
Reading todays Star, everything is up and running again, it will be great to see the water wheel turn and the grinding wheels running again I might take a look tomorrow if the weather is good. It would be great if Abbeydale Ind. Ham. could open up properly again with working days making crucible steel. I was always impressed with those events. spats
Friends Of Porter Valley have done a great job restoring Shepherds Wheel. Now they are concentrating on raising funds to restore Forge Dam back to it's former glory. Hope they succeed.
Nagel
Forge Dam shouldn't need much doing to it apart from dredging the mill pond, should it?
spats
Yes, the bulk of the work is to desilt the dams, stabilise the structures, leaving a small island habitat for the wildlife. Target of £360,000 to 'restore the amenity for the people and retain the area as a wildlife habitat'.
