2010 General Election megathread

Recommended Posts

Nick Clegg needs to think carefully before making a pact with Cameron. The Lib Dems kicked the Tories out of Hallam largely because life long Labour voters voted Lim Dem when voting tactically. If Clegg joins up with Cameron now, then in the next election those former life long Labour voters are likely to vote Labour again.....Nick could end up loosing his seat...if he's going to join the Tories, Hallam may as well be Conservative......

The majority voted tory.

How can the "majority" have voted Tory when they only got 36% of the vote.

Largest single party quite clearly and should get first crack at forming a government - if they can't perhaps the representatives of the 64% of the electorate that didn't vote Tory can?

British politics from anAmerian viewpoint is one of amazement that you are able to create a governmnt after only a few weeks of campaigning, and at little comparatiive expense against the months, nay sometimes years and great expense in America. I wonder sometimes how a President can do four years of work with two of them on the trail. But does your system work any better? 1don't know. Your election didn't cxreate a working majority. Our system ought to locate the best people for the job. But the fact that Sarah Palin was actively able to secure Vice Presidency votes shows that it is far from perfect, and Bush for two terms beggars sanity

I think the advantages of our system over the American one are getting less over the years. Our system didn't used to be a popularity contest like it seems to be in America, but now with live debates and the press discussing what they wear etc, it now seems ours is going that way.

Another advantage was that anyone could be Prime Minister, you didn't have to have gone to University, you didn't have to be a millionaire. Now it seems that the party who can throw the most money at a campaign and can buy the favour of Rupert Murdoch will probably win.

I think with this election for us, and the 2000 election in America it is a joke that we are telling other countries that they should follow our model democracy!

Can anyone recall the last time a government got more than 50% of the vote - can't recall it happening in my lifetime.

Many people exhibit Cleggist tendencies in that seat.
