Trouble ahead for the Union?

Recommended Posts

Following Thursday's election, the Conservative party now have an outright majority of 62 seats - in England. (It will be 63 assuming they hold Thirsk and Malton, which is as close to a foregone conclusion as any seat gets.)

And yet, when they try to implement laws which will affect only England and no other part of the Union, they can be outvoted by MPs from Scotland and Wales who are opposed to them. It's even possible (though unlikely) that a coalition government could be formed which would rule over England against the country's wishes. Meanwhile, the same issues in relation to Scotland and Wales will be decided by their own Parliaments, chosen by their own people.

How long can this situation last? How willing will the English be to put up with it?

Interestingly, the one party most dedicated to preserving the Union which is now preventing the Tory party from taking control of England is ... the Tory party. One wonders if this situation might lead them to consider letting the SNP have their way and giving up Scotland in order to secure power in the rest of the nation.
