Just to put an element of reality into this thread:

They were some of the candidates of The Christian Party, whose policies can be seen here:

http://www.christianparty.org.uk/policies.html

... and include:

Sell off state owned hospitals and healthcare facilities to private sector healthcare providers

Big vote winner, that one!

A lot of sane christians wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Examining the results of the various independent parties is irrelevant, since you are only looking at the lunatic fringe. Besides, the political strategy of the Christian right has changed. No doubt following the US example.

They have moved away from the independent Christian parties, and intend to place more evangelicals within the mainstream parties. At the moment it’s the Tory party, and people like Nadine Dorries, Fiona Bruce, and Louise Bagshawe come immediately to mind.

Even Philippa Stroud, whose views were definitely of the Christian Party lunatic fringe variety, only narrowly failed to become a Conservative MP. Had her views not become widely known in the days before the election she would now be an MP.

Even more worrying is that it seems to me that the Church is becoming more politically active. I might be paranoid of course. I have a friend who plays in a Christian band in a few churches, and he said this weekend that he was uncomfortable with the fact that he noticed many churches imploring their congregations to vote for the anti-abortion candidates.

I expect this interference to increase.

Some proof that people prefer to elect politicians to political office. No proof at all about what people think of religion, except that they know the difference between it and politics.

Those 26 prelates have no business in the house of lords[unelected].
