Airlines all over the world are in trouble even to the point of going bust.

This ash cloud thing has cost them all a fortune.

The whole industry is in fear of their jobs.

mmm.... they don't want more cash. They just don't want their colleagues to be sacked because the management don't like them and to be treated with respect.

It always surprises me how quick people are to judge other workers, when they have taken a difficult decision to go on strike without knowing the half of what the dispute is about. Are people so conditioned since the Thatcher years that they lap up the management propaganda, spread by the mainstream media, without realising there is another side to the story.

Ten years isn't really that long and besides many people in many jobs don't get any annual benefits at all, even after 10 years service.

 

That is not the point. The point is that BA have specifically targeted the people that have gone on strike to lose their seniority. This is a dispute about union busting.

There's plenty of cabin crew that represent the best of BA and are immune to the Marxist, revolutionary apeals and will not go on strike.

 

Why doesn't it surprise me you are supporting scabs? Yesterday it was Hitler, today it is scabs... :rolleyes:

what about other perks like free airport parking etc...

and paid for hotels while they stopover in holiday resorts

 

There are 12,000 cabin crew....plus thousands of pilots, managers, ground staff, baggage handlers etc. There are car parks provided for all of these on one long strip of road. Nobody has to pay. It facilitates spaces for these people to make sure that a) we can all get to work, b) we don't take up all the spaces in other car parks. Buses come to collect us all to take us to Terminal 5.

 

As for hotels down route. British Airways gets a deal with hotels around the world as they have regular rooms rented every night. If we had to pay for hotel rooms, we would be paying more than we earn.

 

Get some insight. This is part of the job. Not a perk. ALL airlines have contracts with hotels, and all airlines pay (and they don't pay very much, either!) It is just part of the airline industry. You land, a bus collects you, you go to the hotel. Can you imagine the chaos if this was not the case? it is just part of the operation of any airline.

 

I am beginning to think that this is just about jealousy, after having read some of these comments.

 

It's the job. If you like it...apply for it! You will have to forfeit other things though....like, endless days and nights with your family, Christmas, Easter, bank holidays, summer holidays etc (and you don't get extra pay for working at these times like you do in other jobs....and NO, nobody is moaning about that).

 

And, why do people say that BA crew want more money? What news are they reading?

So, bottom line is, then, people are just jealous because we get this one perk, and they think we shouldn't, because not everyone else does....although, most people I know get better perks in THEIR jobs. By the way, they can only take the flight if there is space on board, too. They do not get a seat in place of a paying customer. It is only if the seat is unsold. So, would BA rather have an unsold seat...OR have a crew member on it, who has generated at least some income for them? I never use staff travel. Far too stressful, particularly when travelling with your family for a booked holiday when there is no guarantee you will get on the flight.

 

Actually, Kingmaker, the crew don't care about the free flight. As a matter of fact, those who went on strike have now been illegally treated, and have LOST their staff travel from the last round of strikes. BA will have to reinstate this, as they are not allowed to discriminate and penalise a group of people taking part in a legal strike.
