British Airways union Unite announces 20 more strike days

Recommended Posts

The gist of it seems to be that they don't want their reward packages bringing in line with the rest of the industry?

The 3 reasons given for rejecting the offer were (and I paraphrase):

1. the failure of BA to fully restore travel concessions from all crew who took industrial action. Something that is probably illegal, and if not something no self respecting union would agree to.

2. disciplinary actions against over 50 crew members. Again victimisation of strikers on trumped up charges, is not something unions take lightly. An injury to one is an injury to all being a fundamental principle in any union struggle.

3. lack of trust in BA's management to honour their agreements.

So nothing at all to do with reward packages being brought in to line with the rest of the industry!

What makes you think you know better when the recommendation to reject was made on such clear terms?

And, to make out like they're not just being plain unreasonable, they've bundled in a couple of complaints about being treated fairly and the safety of customers.

If you look at the reasons for the dispute you will see the couple of complaints about being unreasonable are the sole reasons given by Unite when recommending rejection of the offer.

So really, the cabin crew are saying sod the rest of BA, because we don't want to be assessed for pay with our peers in industry we'll bring the company to it's knees. Sod the engineers, ground crew, pilots, maintenance, back office, sales, catering, suppliers, customers etc...

So in reality you are making up your own dispute and reasons for it!

Why are you making up your own dispute? What do you have to gain from criticising workers standing up to a bullying management that have set conditions on an offer that includes the victimisation of staff that have participated in an industrial dispute, something that is ostensibly illegal and something no union or union member with an ounce of common sense would countenance agreeing to.

The only people bringing BA to its knees is Willie Walsh and his strategy of prolonging the dispute with ludicrous and insulting offers. If anyone is shareholder or traveller on British Airways they should be directing their complaints directly to Willie Walsh and calling for his resignation or to be sacked.

Actually, Kingmaker, the crew don't care about the free flight. As a matter of fact, those who went on strike have now been illegally treated, and have LOST their staff travel from the last round of strikes. BA will have to reinstate this, as they are not allowed to discriminate and penalise a group of people taking part in a legal strike.

The last time Unite and BA cabin crew staff claimed that they had been illegally treated their claim was thrown out of court.

And it was Unite that was found to have carried out an illegal ballot.

So far it looks as though Wille Walshe's team are pretty up on what's legal and what's not, so we'll have to wait and see whether Walsh has acted illegally or not.

That is not the point. The point is that BA have specifically targeted the people that have gone on strike to lose their seniority. This is a dispute about union busting.

It may not be the point of the current dispute, but It wasn't I who brought up the 10 year service issue, it was BA Cabin crew poster Babooshka.

Actually highgreen and Shane69 brought it up along with a load of other myths about BA Cabin crew perks.

All the more reason to strike.

The law is skewed against Unions in this country and because of that strikes are needed to protect members from victimisation.

Not to be pedantic Wildcat, but it was Babooshka (post 28 ) that first brought up the issue of 10 year service, and the subsequent question she posed about 10 years service.

That will be their ONE free annual return FLIGHT (they have to pay airport taxes and surcharges etc) for having done over ten years service. Is ONE free return flight per year really too generous when you have worked for a company for that long?

Which as you can see is in response to Shane39 spreading myths about BA Cabin crew perks, rather like this post as well:

The context is an attempted justification of the strike based on BA Cabin crew having a minor perk.... something that really justifies allowing your colleagues to be sacked for minor offences whilst taking part in the same dispute as they have been.

sack the lot of em....plenty more will take the jobs from smaller airlines.

I would bet plenty of people that now find themselves out of a job would gladly work as BA Cabin Crew regardless of Wille Walsh being their boss, even if they came from a completely different industry previously, and you know what, I'd bet plenty would actually make a pretty good fist of it.
