Brits flock to Thailand for sex with young girls don't they , then say, Oh! the scenery's lovely do they...?What about the thousands of backpackers?(and some of them are even female). callippo Posted May 23, 2010 Share Posted May 23, 2010 western style backpackers are a small minority of south east Asian tourists, even in Thailand, which gets more than any of the other countries. 3 out of every 4 foreign tourists in Thailand are Asians. Most of the western style Ko Pha Ngan bound backpackers don't notice them as they don't stand out so much from the locals. the Thai tourist industry has become adept at marketing to different segments. In Bangkok, they encourage the backpackers to head to Thanon Khao San. The Japanese are catered for over near Ekkamai at Sukhumvit Soi's 36-38 - the area is full of Japaense restos and karaoke bars. Over in the Victory Monument area, you'll struggle to see a single farang but there's loads of and loads of hotels and guesthouses full of high spending Chinese tourists. The Thais know that a lot of Asian tourists don't especially want to be around a lot of westerners, so they keep them seperate. Those hotels in Victory Monument don't do any marketing in the western countries. They advertise only in Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the emerging market of mainland China.
