Doingalright
when where how? Between 1999 and 2002, Mr Brown ordered the sale of almost 400 tons of the gold reserves when the price was at a 20-year low. Since then, the price has more than quadrupled, meaning the decision cost taxpayers an estimated £7 billion, according to Mike Warburton of the accountants Grant Thornton. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/investing/gold/7511589/Explain-why-you-sold-Britains-gold-Gordon-Brown-told.html
nightlight59
From today's Guardian: The Labour Party has said that it has gained around 12,000 new members in an unexpected surge in membership since the election, taking it's membership to 166,200 and claimed that some of it's new members are former Lib Dem members who are disillusioned with the coalition. I personally know of one Lib Dem supporter who joined the Labour Party, I would imagine there will be many more like him in Sheffield, with Clegg representing Hallam. Will be very interesting to see what happens in the next council elections. Why the suprise? they are both liberal left wing and will always vie for the liberal leftie voter. Of course not, no-one can predict the future and the auditors at the time agreed he got a good price at the time.

If the price had continued to fall would he have been hailed a hero …….. I suppose not. "If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a Merry Christmas?" Well that's that then, what with you knowing one Lib Dem who has defected to Labour, Nick Clegg will no doubt resign as deputy prime minister on the strength of it. As it says in the article: It is understood that Mr Brown pushed ahead with the sale despite serious misgivings at the Bank of England. It is not thought that senior Bank experts were even consulted about the decision, which was driven through by a small group of senior Treasury aides close to Mr Brown. Will be very interesting to see what happens in the next council elections. Tory Local Government Minister Grant Shapps said: ‘Labour are raiding councillors’ allowances because their private donations have collapsed and they spot an opportunity to funnel local residents’ cash into Labour coffers. This is a desperate attempt to shore up the party finances at the expense of hard-working taxpayers who would ultimately be forced to foot the bill.
