Surge in Labour Party membership as Lib Dems desert their party

Recommended Posts

Well its ridiculous to base your vote on events decades ago. Is that not obvious?

No, the bnpee vote would have been much higher if people didn't remember what happened decades ago under their spiritual leader, Hitler.

Huge mistake. They talk about the power to recall MPs that don't perform while simultaneously looking to lock for 5 years in an experimental government that could fall apart in months. What happens if they screw up on the economy even more than Labour and we can't get em out for 5 years?
I would not worry much about them screwing up more than Labour.............an impossibility! the amateurs have left the building!

12,000 is really neither here nor there, but it brings up an interesting thought. If all of the Lib-Dem voters who tended to side more with Labour than the Tories, abandoned their party and started voting for Labour ... would the remaining Lib-Dems end up simply joining the Tories, and would we end up with just two parties again?

I think this is a possible scenario. However, I think there are many Lib Dems who are sitting back and watching what happens. It's interesting that Charles Kennedy has made openly critical noises already. I also think it is significant that Simon Hughes has taken a Government job. He's waiting for the fall out.

Given that the right wing press have consistently used the term in a derogatory way to describe many of Nulabour's policies it's not surprising there is some confusion.

There's an amusing description by Paddy Ashdown, reported in the Independent today, of the 'socialist' rump in the last government, - John Prescott, David Blunkett, John Reid and Jack Straw as "knuckle-dragging Neanderthals" They each probably thought of themselves as 'socialists' at some stage in their political career but were happy enough to abandon their principles in the pursuit of power and position.

Just as Clegg and his coterie are doing now.

Shouldn't this thread title be 12000 people join the Labour Party after the useless Brown stands down as leader?

Just think about those folk who stood up for Brown these past months. If the party had got rid of him at the time that Hoone attempted a leadership challenge, they might well have picked up an extra half dozen seats at the election and formed a coalition with the LDs...

So at least Brown did one decent thing as PM. He led Labour to defeat.

Given the number of members who have left Labour I suspect that many of those joining now will be ex-members shocked into activity by the return of a Tory dominated administration. Some may just be pleased to see the back of Brown and it will be interesting to see how they fair under a Milibland (or Milibrand) led party.

What are these socialist principles you speak of,and who has them? I agree regarding the afore mentioned politicos,(particularly 2 Jags and daft Dave)but surely all politicians are driven by power and control if not greed ultimately!I always thought loadsa money Blair was a shining example of what a socialist politician could achieve if you played your cards right! Surely not wanting to bother hanging the red flag over your local town hall!
