York..is it worth a visit these days?

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions on where to stay?

i can suggest a very good pub to stay in, it's called 'the lighthorseman'. the rooms are excellent and very reasonably priced, they do excellent breakfasts(included) and good evening meals and always have 2 or 3 real ales on. its only a 10 minute, by the river, walk in to york city centre. they are on the web, just google 'the lighthorseman'. we've stayed there 4 times now, you won't be disappointed!

Whatever you do, do not take Tess' advice.

The Golden Fleece on Pavement is awful, grotty and in short, a dump (and for the record, I've actually stayed there). There are zillions of far nicer pubs to visit (PM me for a list).

Further, it might class itself as York's most haunted pub http://samuraidave.wordpress.com/2006/11/11/staying-a-night-at-yorks-most-haunted-pub/ but don't they all? I think you'll find the Punch Bowl on Stonegate http://www.blackswanyork.co.uk/ and many other pubs have a better claim to that title (Black Swan on Peasholme Green being another example). http://www.blackswanyork.co.uk/

JenC, my fellow would-be-Yorkie, puts it better than I do.

(Tess, nothing personal. I ain't called OUSEtunes for nothing!)

:hihi: Didn't see your response from last time! To be honest the Golden Fleece isn't my cup of tea but it seems to go down well with everyone else - as long as it isn't just me. We spent a lot of time in the Punchbowl which we preferred!

As to the new poster, I've always stayed in the Novotel which will do, the second time we went it was a bit grubby and of course you don't get the whole personalised experience that you would get with a smaller establishment, however there is usually deals on so you shouldn't have to pay too much. If I was to go again this year I think i'd look for somewhere more "quaint".

For pubs I'd recommend The Yorkshire Terrier, The Last Drop Inn, The Three Legged Mare and Brigantes.

I'm looking to have a big day out in York with a bunch of guys who I know from Twitter next month and the chances are that we'll end up in some of those. Pivni is another one which I'm sure will be on the list.

I've heard good things about York pubs, not been to York in a long long time though. What I can say about York is that there a lot of people in my old stomping ground of Colchester who wish that their town looked after its history as well as York.

I recommend the brewery tour mainly for the chance to drink pristine, wonderful beer, straight from the barrel in relaxed surroundings. It's not far from the train station so you could make it your last stop before heading home. On the other hand you may have had enough by then! :D

I think that is on the cards. The last time this group got together we started off with a visit to a brewery in Manchester and went on from there.
